heighten
Increase the intensity
Heighten means to make higher or more intense.
You can heighten a wall by adding to it, but more often the word applies to abstractions: heighten awareness, heighten tension, heighten security.
Senses may be heightened by alertness or drugs.
The approaching storm heightened our anxiety.
The intransitive form appears less often: Excitement heightened as the deadline approached.
