tea dance

Midday social gathering

A tea dance is an afternoon social dance, typically held between 4 and 7 p.m.

The term originated in the early twentieth century when such events included tea service.

Today tea dances survive mainly in gay culture, where they remain popular at resorts and on cruise ships: We hit the tea dance at the Boatslip every Sunday.
