Castro

Havana's ruling family

Castro is a Spanish and Portuguese surname meaning "castle" or "fortress," from Latin *castrum*.

The name is most associated with Fidel Castro, who led Cuba's communist revolution and ruled the island from 1959 to 2008.

In American cities, particularly San Francisco, the Castro refers to a historically gay neighborhood: We're going to brunch in the Castro.
