take-in

Swindle or shelter

A take-in is a deception or swindle—something designed to fool you: The whole investment opportunity was a take-in.

The term is somewhat old-fashioned, more common in British English.

It derives from the phrasal verb "take in," meaning to deceive: Don't be taken in by his charm.
