tailwaters

Below the spillway

Tailwaters are the waters immediately downstream from a dam, spillway, or hydroelectric plant.

The term is especially common in fishing contexts, where tailwaters often provide excellent conditions for trout due to the cold, oxygen-rich water released from dam reservoirs: The tailwaters below the dam are famous for trophy-sized brown trout.
