tailskid
Tail-mounted landing support
A tailskid is a small skid or runner mounted under the tail of an aircraft, supporting the rear fuselage when the plane is on the ground.
Common on early aircraft before tailwheels became standard, tailskids helped protect the tail during landings and ground handling: The biplane's tailskid scraped across the grass runway.
