switchboards

Manual connection panels

Switchboards are panels of switches and controls for directing telephone calls or electrical circuits.

In early telephone systems, operators at switchboards manually connected callers by plugging cables into jacks: She worked the switchboard at the hotel.

The term now applies more broadly to any central control panel routing communications or power.
