Toll calls are long-distance telephone calls that incur charges beyond the flat rate for local service.
The term dates from an era when calling outside your local exchange meant paying per-minute fees: I ran up the phone bill with toll calls to my girlfriend in another state.
Now largely obsolete as unlimited calling plans have eliminated distance-based pricing.
