phone booths
Enclosed calling stations
Phone booths are small enclosed structures, typically on sidewalks, containing a public telephone.
Before mobile phones, they provided privacy for calls away from home: Superman changed into his costume in a phone booth.
Now largely obsolete, they persist mainly as nostalgic symbols of mid-20th-century urban life.
British English prefers telephone box.
