telephone poles
Roadside wooden towers
Telephone poles are tall wooden posts that support overhead wires carrying electricity or telephone signals along roads and through neighborhoods.
Though increasingly replaced by underground cables, they remain a common feature of American landscapes.
The singular telephone pole often appears in descriptions of rural or suburban scenery, or in accounts of car accidents: The truck skidded off the road and hit a telephone pole.
