trunk lines
Primary communication routes
Trunk lines are the main channels in a transportation or communication network—the high-capacity routes connecting major hubs rather than local endpoints.
In telecommunications, trunk lines carry signals between switching centers.
In railroads, they're the primary routes between cities, as opposed to branch lines serving smaller towns.
The trunk lines were overloaded during the emergency.
