VLAN
Virtual network partition
A VLAN (virtual local area network) is a network segment created through software configuration rather than physical wiring.
Devices on the same VLAN communicate as if connected to the same switch, even when physically dispersed across a building or campus.
Network administrators use VLANs to isolate traffic, improve security, and organize users by function rather than location: We put all the printers on their own VLAN.
