subnetworks

Divided network portions

Subnetworks are smaller networks within a larger network.

In computing, a subnetwork (or subnet) is a logical subdivision of an IP network, used to improve performance and security by segmenting traffic: The IT department created separate subnetworks for each floor.

In neural networks, subnetworks are component parts that can function independently.

More generally, any network—social, electrical, transportation—may contain subnetworks serving specialized functions within the whole.
