task forces

Temporary working groups

Task forces are temporary groups assembled to address specific problems or objectives.

The term originated in military contexts—a naval task force combines ships for a particular mission—but now applies broadly to any focused working group: The mayor appointed a task force on homelessness.

Task forces disband once their purpose is accomplished.
