subgenus
Below genus, above
A subgenus is a taxonomic rank below genus but above species, used to group closely related species within a larger genus.
Biologists use subgenera when a genus contains many species that cluster into distinct subgroups: The subgenus Prunus includes plums and apricots.
In scientific naming, the subgenus appears in parentheses between genus and species.
