stumping

Hitting the trail

Stumping is campaigning for political office or on behalf of a candidate, from the historical practice of speaking from tree stumps as improvised platforms.

Politicians go stumping through swing states; surrogates do stumping for candidates they support: She spent October stumping for the governor's reelection.

Stumping also means baffling or perplexing: That question really stumped me.
