standing back
Keeping one's distance
Standing back is the act of moving away from something or someone, either physically or figuratively, to gain perspective or allow others to proceed.
If you stand back from a situation, you withdraw your involvement temporarily to assess it more clearly: Standing back from the project helped me see what was really going wrong.
It can also mean literally stepping away to create distance or make room: The crowd was standing back to let the paramedics through.
