caucusing

Meeting before voting

Caucusing is meeting in a caucus—a closed gathering where members of a political party or faction discuss strategy, select candidates, or decide positions.

In American politics, caucusing often refers to the process by which party members in some states gather to choose presidential nominees: Iowa Democrats spent the evening caucusing at schools and community centers.

More broadly, any group that huddles to coordinate before a larger meeting is caucusing.
