stitch up

Sew a cut

Stitch up has two distinct meanings in British English.

The literal sense is to close a wound with surgical stitches: The doctor stitched up the gash on his forehead.

The informal sense means to manipulate circumstances so that someone appears guilty or is unfairly blamed for something they didn't do: He claimed the police had stitched him up.

A stitch-up is such a frame-up or a deal arranged to someone's disadvantage behind their back.
