stenotypist

Shorthand machine operator

A stenotypist is a person who uses a stenotype machine to record speech in real time.

The machine uses a specialized keyboard with fewer keys than a standard typewriter, allowing combinations of keys pressed simultaneously to represent sounds, syllables, or entire words.

Stenotypists work in courtrooms, closed captioning, and other settings requiring verbatim transcription at speaking speed.
