steelyard

Unequal-arm balance

A steelyard is a type of balance scale with unequal arms—a short arm holds the object being weighed while a counterweight slides along a longer graduated arm until balance is achieved.

The position of the counterweight indicates the weight.

Ancient and still used in some markets, it requires only one standard weight to measure a range of masses.
