pan balance
Two-dish weigher
A pan balance is a weighing device with two dishes or pans suspended from opposite ends of a horizontal beam.
Objects are placed in one pan and known weights in the other until the beam levels, indicating equal mass.
The design dates to antiquity and remains common in science classrooms: Students used a pan balance to measure the mass of mineral samples.
