state fairs
Annual agricultural festivals
State fairs are annual exhibitions showcasing a state's agriculture, livestock, crafts, and culture.
They feature competitions for produce and animals, carnival rides, food vendors, and entertainment.
Most originated in the nineteenth century to promote farming; today they blend agricultural tradition with commercial spectacle: We go to the state fair every August for the fried food and the pig races.
