spittoons

Chewers' floor protectors

Spittoons are containers for spitting into, especially for tobacco chewers.

Before cigarettes dominated, chewing tobacco was common, and spittoons sat in public places—saloons, hotel lobbies, courtrooms—to catch the resulting spit.

They've largely disappeared along with the habit, surviving mainly as antiques or period props: a brass spittoon by the barber's chair.
