cuspidor

Saloon floor fixture

A cuspidor is a receptacle for spitting into, especially one designed for chewing tobacco.

These wide-mouthed containers, often brass or ceramic, were common fixtures in public spaces through the early twentieth century.

Now largely obsolete, the word survives mainly in antique shops and period fiction.

Also called a spittoon.
