cigarette cards
Pack-inserted trading pictures
Cigarette cards are small illustrated cards that were packaged with cigarettes as collectibles, popular from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century.
They featured athletes, film stars, military figures, wildlife, and other subjects, forming sets that encouraged continued purchases.
My grandfather's cigarette cards from the 1930s are worth a fortune now.
The practice largely died out but established the template for modern trading cards.
