species name

Latin biological designation

A species name is the formal scientific designation for a particular type of organism, following the binomial nomenclature system established by Linnaeus.

It consists of two parts: the genus name (capitalized) followed by the specific epithet (lowercase), both italicized, as in *Homo sapiens* or *Canis lupus*.

Species names are standardized across languages, allowing scientists worldwide to refer unambiguously to the same organism regardless of varying common names.
