indigenous name
Original people's term
An indigenous name is the name used by native peoples for a place, person, or thing, as opposed to names imposed by colonizers or outsiders.
Many places are reclaiming indigenous names: Denali for Mount McKinley, Uluru for Ayers Rock.
The term also applies to personal names in native languages, often replaced by European names during colonization.
