To space out is to lose focus or become inattentive, drifting into a dreamy mental state: Sorry, I totally spaced out during the meeting.
Someone who spaces out may stare blankly, missing what's happening around them.
The adjective spaced-out describes this unfocused condition, sometimes implying drug influence: He looked completely spaced out.
