Sousa

Bandmaster surname, Portuguese

Sousa is a Portuguese surname, most famously associated with John Philip Sousa (1854–1932), the American composer and conductor known as "The March King." His military marches—The Stars and Stripes Forever, Semper Fidelis—remain staples of American band music.

The sousaphone, a large brass instrument that wraps around the player's body, was designed at his suggestion for marching bands.
