sound film

Movie with dialogue

A sound film is a motion picture with synchronized audio—dialogue, music, and sound effects recorded alongside the visual footage.

The term emerged in the late 1920s to distinguish talkies from silent films: The Jazz Singer was among the first commercially successful sound films.

Now that virtually all films have sound, the term appears mainly in historical contexts.
