arrestor
Something that stops
An arrestor is a device that stops, catches, or prevents something harmful.
Lightning arrestors protect electrical systems from voltage surges.
On aircraft carriers, an arrestor cable catches landing planes with a tailhook, bringing them to a rapid stop.
Also spelled arrester, which is more common in American usage.
