isolator
Electrical disconnect switch
An isolator is a device or mechanism that separates, insulates, or prevents transmission between systems.
In electrical work, an isolator disconnects circuits for safety: The technician switched off the isolator before working on the panel.
In laboratories, an isolator is an enclosed chamber that keeps materials sterile or contained.
The word applies broadly to anything that creates separation—vibration isolators dampen mechanical tremors, optical isolators allow light to pass in only one direction.
