bonito
Smaller mackerel relative
Bonito are medium-sized fish related to tuna and mackerel, found in warm waters worldwide and prized both as sport fish and for eating.
The flesh is darker and stronger-flavored than tuna, often used dried and flaked in Japanese cooking as a base for dashi broth.
We caught three bonito trolling off the coast.
In Spanish, bonito means pretty or handsome, which occasionally causes confusion in bilingual contexts.
