skim coat
Surface smoothing coat
A skim coat is a thin layer of plaster, joint compound, or similar material applied to a wall or ceiling to create a smooth, even surface.
It covers imperfections, texture, or repairs rather than building up thickness: The contractor applied a skim coat to hide the old popcorn ceiling.
As a verb, to skim coat is to apply such a layer.
