scratch coat
First plaster layer
A scratch coat is the first layer of plaster or stucco applied to a wall or ceiling.
The surface is scored with grooves while still wet—scratched—to help the next coat bond securely.
The mason applied the scratch coat and let it cure before adding the brown coat.
