emergency siren
Urgent wailing signal
An emergency siren is a loud warning device used to alert the public to danger—tornado warnings, air raids, tsunami alerts, or other threats requiring immediate action.
The distinctive wailing or oscillating tone is designed to carry over long distances and penetrate buildings: The emergency sirens went off and everyone headed for the basement.
Emergency vehicles also use sirens, though these are more often called simply sirens.
