klaxon
Loud electric horn
A klaxon is a loud electric horn or alarm, originally a trademarked device producing a distinctive harsh blaring sound.
The word now refers generically to any loud warning signal: The klaxon sounded and workers evacuated the building.
Figuratively, something that serves as an urgent warning may be called a klaxon: His resignation was a klaxon signaling deeper problems.
