sit-out

Stay on sidelines

A sit-out is a covered outdoor area attached to a house, typically a porch or veranda used for relaxing: We had tea on the sit-out.

The term is common in South Asian English, especially Indian English, where such spaces are standard features of homes.

In other contexts, a sit-out can be a period of not participating—sitting something out.
