ice-out
Frozen surface breaks
Ice-out is the moment in spring when a frozen lake or river becomes free of ice, marking the end of winter conditions.
In northern regions, ice-out dates are tracked and sometimes wagered on: The ice-out on Lake Winnipesaukee came early this year.
The term also describes a social freeze—deliberately excluding someone: After the scandal, she got the ice-out from her former friends.
