inherited disease
Passed-down medical condition
An inherited disease is a medical condition passed from parents to offspring through genes.
Unlike diseases caused by infection or environment, inherited diseases result from genetic mutations present at birth: Huntington's disease is inherited, cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease.
Some require defective genes from both parents; others need only one.
