shuttlecraft

Short-range orbital vessel

A shuttlecraft is a small spacecraft designed to transport passengers or cargo between larger vessels or between a ship and a planetary surface.

The term comes from science fiction, particularly *Star Trek*, where shuttlecraft ferry crew members on short-range missions: They took the shuttlecraft down to the planet.

Real spacecraft performing similar functions are sometimes called shuttles.
