shebeen

Unlicensed drinking den

A shebeen is an unlicensed establishment selling alcohol, originally in Ireland and Scotland, now associated especially with South Africa and other parts of Africa.

Shebeens historically operated in defiance of colonial or apartheid-era restrictions on Black Africans buying liquor.

The term can suggest either illicit drinking dens or informal neighborhood bars with cultural significance: The shebeen was packed on Friday nights.
