self-tape

Actor's home recording

A self-tape is an audition video actors record themselves and submit electronically, rather than performing in person.

The practice became standard in film and television casting, especially after the pandemic normalized remote auditions: I have three self-tapes due by Friday.

As a verb, to self-tape is to record such an audition: She self-taped for the lead role.
