perspective-taking

Seeing others' angles

Perspective-taking is the mental act of imagining how things look from someone else's point of view—their thoughts, feelings, or circumstances.

It's a core component of empathy and social understanding: The exercise required perspective-taking, asking students to argue the opposite position.

Distinct from sympathy, which feels for someone, perspective-taking thinks as them.
