meta-awareness

Consciousness of consciousness

Meta-awareness is awareness of one's own awareness—the capacity to observe your own mental states as they occur.

In meditation, meta-awareness lets you notice that your mind has wandered.

In psychology, it describes the ability to monitor your own thoughts, emotions, or attention: I suddenly had a meta-awareness that I was getting defensive.

The concept is central to mindfulness practice and cognitive therapy.
