rear differential

Torque-splitting mechanism

A rear differential is a gearbox in the rear axle of a vehicle that allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds while receiving power from the driveshaft.

This is essential when turning—the outside wheel travels farther than the inside wheel and must spin faster.

The mechanic said the whining noise was coming from the rear differential.

Vehicles with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive have one; front-wheel-drive vehicles use a front differential instead.
