seam allowance

Fabric edge extra

Seam allowance is the strip of fabric between the stitching line and the raw edge of a garment piece.

Standard seam allowances range from a quarter inch to five-eighths inch, depending on the pattern and fabric.

When cutting fabric, you cut along the outer line; when sewing, you stitch along the inner line, with the seam allowance providing material for the seam itself.

This pattern uses half-inch seam allowances.
