sea-horse

Upright swimming fish

A sea-horse is a small marine fish with a horse-shaped head and curled tail, swimming upright and gripping seagrass with its tail.

Males carry eggs in a pouch until they hatch.

The hyphenated spelling is old-fashioned; seahorse is now standard.

In Greek mythology, sea-horses were creatures with horse forebodies and fish tails that pulled Poseidon's chariot.
