diabase

Dark igneous rock

Diabase is a dark, dense igneous rock with a fine to medium grain, formed when magma cools slowly underground.

It's similar to basalt in composition but coarser in texture.

Geologists and stonemasons encounter it frequently; it's durable enough for use in road construction and as crushed stone.

In British usage, the same rock is often called dolerite.
